Sunnyside Beach Closed to Water Recreation Activities

On Tuesday night, July 20th, a major sewer line operated by Pierce County in the City of Lakewood collapsed along Lakewood Drive near Clover Park Technical College.

Pierce County responded and private companies are attempting to intercept the sewage until the line is fixed.  Unfortunately, an undetermined amount of raw sewage spilled and was flushed into the storm drains which proceeded to flow into Flett Creak which feeds into Leach Creak which flows into Chambers Creek which feeds into Puget Sound near the park.

The Tacoma Pierce County Health Department in an abundance of caution has closed Sunnyside Beach to water recreation activities (swimming, wading, boating, etc) and shellfish harvesting.  Signs have been posted at the entry way to the park near the parking pay box and at the z-gate near the railroad tracks while they perform testing and this situation continues.

It is unknown how long the closure will continue, however, it is anticipated it will not be resolved until well into the weekend or early next week.
